Steda Registers compared with QuickBooks Online Advanced fixed assets

QuickBooks Online Advanced carries a fixed asset feature that creates a schedule and posts book depreciation every month on its own. It is genuinely useful and it is already in a plan some companies pay for. The gap is the tax book.

What QuickBooks Online Advanced does today

Intuit documents four calculation methods for the fixed asset feature in QuickBooks Online Advanced: straight line, declining balance, double declining balance and units of production. It builds the schedule from the purchase price, the useful life, the start date and the accumulated depreciation you enter, then records book depreciation at the start of each month without being asked.

That covers the book side of a simple register. It does not calculate a tax book, so the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System, the mid-quarter convention, Section 179 and bonus depreciation are still worked out somewhere else, which for most companies means the spreadsheet is still open.

The other side of it

Where QuickBooks Online Advanced is the better answer

  • It is already in the plan. If you pay for Advanced for the other reasons, the fixed asset feature costs nothing more.
  • It posts the entry on its own every month, with nothing to remember.
  • There is no second system, no second sign-in and no connection to keep alive.
  • For a company that only ever needed book depreciation on a handful of assets, that is the whole job done.

Do not buy this if

When Steda Registers is the wrong purchase

  • You have no tax book to keep, no prepaid schedule, no leases and no rendition. One register with book depreciation is what Advanced already does.
  • Your auditor has never asked how the register is controlled.
  • You are on QuickBooks Online Advanced and buying Steda only for fixed assets. Look at the whole of Registers first, because the price is for four registers.

If one of those is you, say so on the call and we will tell you so. A customer who did not need this is worse for us than a customer we never had.

Questions

Does Steda replace QuickBooks Online Advanced?

No. Steda is not a general ledger. It keeps the registers and posts the journal entries into whichever QuickBooks you run, Online on any plan or Desktop including Enterprise.

Can we keep using the Advanced fixed asset feature alongside Steda?

You can, but two registers for the same assets will disagree within a quarter. Pick one. If Steda is the register, turn the automatic monthly depreciation off in QuickBooks so the entry is not posted twice.

Does Steda calculate Section 179 and bonus depreciation?

Yes, on the tax book, alongside the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System and the mid-quarter convention. Book and tax sit on the same register with their own methods and lives, and the difference between them is reported.

Do we need QuickBooks Online Advanced to use Steda?

No. Steda connects to QuickBooks Online on any plan, and to QuickBooks Desktop through the Web Connector. If Advanced was on the list only for the fixed asset feature, that is worth pricing again.
